Kabus & meke

Captain Reef Endeavour - Friday, August 05, 2011

Voyage 109 of Reef Endeavour was another cruise through the Yasawa Islands which ended on 2nd August. One of the highlights of the cruise are the kabus (kamboos) of which seven night passengers experience two during the cruise (one on each of the three and four night sections). Kabu is the collective name for the “party” where the villagers entertain their guests to a lovo dinner (fish, chicken, pork and veges cooked in the earth oven) and a meke (mekay – concert) after having welcomed them into the village by means of the traditional sevusevu ceremony (also known as the kava ceremony).

We experience two kabus during the seven night cruise; one at Gunu ( Noonoo) Village on Naviti Island during the four night section and the other at Yalobi (Yalombee) Village on Waya Island during the three night cruise – both very traditional, different to each other, and much more “authentic” than tourists usually experience when staying in a resort on one of islands. Cruising is definitely the only way of seeing “the real Fiji”.
